| dc.description | El objetivo del artículo es examinar de qué manera, desde el punto de vista de la mentalidad, los europeos hicieron frente a una de las mayores crisis de su historia: la invasión de los mongoles en el siglo XIII. Esto exige, en primer lugar, el estudio de los documentos que describen a los invasores así como su lugar de origen, el centro de Asia. En segundo lugar, se han de considerar las crónicas universales que narran la historia remota del continente oriental. Desde el punto de vista de la conciencia europea, el análisis de la documentación revela que los occidentales enfrentaron la invasión a través de dos mecanismos. Primero, la asociación de los conquistadores desconocidos con los legendarios pueblos de Gog y Magog, a través de un proceso de apropiación y reinterpretación de la leyenda. | dc.description | The purpose of this investigation is to examine in which manner,from the point of view of culture, Europe confronted one the biggest crisis of its history: the Mongolian invasion of the XIII century. This requires, in the first place, the study of the documents that describe the invaders, as well as their place of origin, Central Asia. In second place, the universal chronicles which narrate the remote history of Asia must be studied. From the point of view of the European self-consciousness, the analysis of the documentation reveals that the West confronted the invasion through two mechanisms. First, through the association of the unknown conquerors with the legendary peoples of Gog and Magog, through a process of appropriation and reinterpretation of the legend.Second, through the creation of a political-military fiction, the enigmatic Prester John. | - |
