dc.descriptionEn los últimos años, desde la literatura científica y las estrategias de ordenamiento territorial, emerge un renovado interés por las denominadas ciudades medias. El protagonismo alcanzado por estas ciudades encuentra como principal fundamento su potencial capacidad para promover el desarrollo rural y regional, reducir la pobreza y atenuar la migración hacia las grandes urbes. De esta manera, su definición no se limita al tamaño poblacional e integra perspectivas que aluden a las funcionalidades que desempeñan en el territorio. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo contribuir a la conceptualización de la categoría analítica ciudad media y a su identificación dentro de la estructura urbana. La Provincia de Buenos Aires, principal área económica y poblacional de Argentina, es la región de estudio seleccionada a tal fin.-
dc.descriptionIn the recent years, research literature and territorial management policies have given increasing attention to medium sized cities. The renewed interest in these cities is based on their potential ability to promote rural and regional development, to reduce poverty and to lower migration to large cities. Thus, the definition of medium sized cities is not restricted to population size and integrates perspectives that refer to the functions developed in the territory. The present paper aims to contribute to the conceptualization of medium sized city and its identification in the urban structure. The Buenos Aires Province, main economic and most populated area of Argentina, constitutes the region studied for this purpose.-
